Preparation worksheet for “Creating Confident Speakers”.
1 Introduction
I have decided to present this information as a series of tasks, homework, exercises, and FAQ’s, some essential, and some for information, and possibly understanding. You will need to take the essentials on board and perhaps devote a little time to collect, learn, explore, and practice.
None of this is essential to attend do the course and get value. However, I genuinely believe that if you want to get the maximum value out of our time together and make the most progress towards being a stunning speaker then completing the tasks in this worksheet and gaining the understanding and insights presented would be of benefit.
2 Tasks
In the seminar there will be 3 activities relevant to this worksheet these will all impact the “Attitude” part of the seminar.
2.1 The 4 Page exercise
This is the first and will require several days on an off to get the most from doing it. Those of you who attended the Liz Bateson seminar on impostor syndrome if you watched mine the 6th presentation in the series of six in the series off it I will have told you to do this exercise and I would actually have given you the four questions that go with it but for this course having that completed in advance will be extremely helpful because everybody else on the courses is being asked in this questionnaire to complete it before they come on the course if at all possible if you don't it doesn't matter it just means that you'll do it later on and you'll get slightly less from it.
2.1.1 The four-page exercise itself
Is in fact an extremely simple thing to do but the memory and emotional dimensions can make it quite difficult for some people, so degree of application and perseverance is always useful at this time.
All you have to do is go back to within a narrow few of being born and simply write down a sheet of paper (I have found that writing it out using a pencil or pen is in some way I don't understand more beneficial than typing it onto a tablet or dictating it but do whatever works for you) every single thing that you have:-
• Done
• Achieved
• Learned about
• Studied
• Been certified for
• Been awarded for
or
• Simply triumphed at
- in your entire life to date!
This might easily range from you're 1 width swimming certificate your best attitude in class star being a sixer in the Cubs or brownies being a star sports player on a team collecting most litter in your charity squad and so on all the way up to your degree every commercial course you've ever attended for or been certified at all of your post grad documents your white papers your press your published documents and so on.
When we've accumulated that lot and organised them into some sort of list personally I prefer chronological but you might want to group them by type it really it really doesn't matter but when it's complete if you can go and find your mother and or father ask them to go through the list and tell you anything you've missed out and I'll guarantee that they will find at least another five or six each probably things that you didn't regard as important at the time.
2.1.2 The reality
I call this the four-page exercise but in the dozens(hundreds?) that I've done over the over the years working with clients, entrepreneurs, and those whose jobs have been made redundant I've never actually met one that was only four pages, but it seems to me that would be the minimum.
2.1.3 What we do with the four (?) pages?
This is dealt with in the seminar, but I will be asking you if it's all yours if it's true if it's complete and if it is actually things you've done learns known about or earned I will then move on to asking you about how you feel about that, and how this impacts your version of reality whereby you don't have value or worth or knowledge and are therefore an impostor.
I would suggest that, even at this stage, by the time you've done this list, you will realise that you don't earn the label of impostor at all, and that the opposite is in fact true when we examine the hard evidence.
Fair warning, you may not enjoy being faced with hard evidence of, your success, your knowledge, or experience, and your achievements. I am equally sure that, if you are on my seminar there will be ample proof that you have large quantities of all of the above. If the only person that doesn't believe that, is you, then I will do my level best to change that!
3 Activities
3.1 Being the Rock
This is a guided visualisation exercise at the end of which you will appear both to yourself and more importantly to your audience as a solid grounded, immovable, rock. Once established this will be a feeling and place that you will be able to recreate or visit at will.
This exercise will require that you have a chair that you can relax in in the quiet protected space so that I can take you on the appropriate journey.
3.2 NLP Power key trigger
This is a blended NLP exercise involving both periods of visualisation altered mind space and physical activities leaving you with a physical key by means of which you can summons up a particular feeling attitude and way of being from your past when you were optimally powerful and recreate that in real time whenever you need to be in that place before taking on a task that you might find otherwise challenging or difficult.
This exercise will also require that you have a chair that you can relax in in the quiet protected space so that I can take you on the appropriate journey. In addition, you will need a little extra space within which you can stand up and do limit physical activity e.g. turning round.
4 Visualisation, NLP and altered mind-space work.
What do I need to know in advance?
4.1 Your ‘Centre’
During the visualisation, I will be asking you to direct your attention and your breathing to your ‘Centre’. Your ‘centre’ may be found at a point two finger-breadths below your navel and three finger-breadths in at right angles.
It is literally your physical centre of gravity. In martial arts and eastern philosophy, it is also your energy centre (Tan Tien in Chinese, Hara in Japanese and so on) In some (especially European pagan) philosophies it is the meeting of the inner and outer energy fields or universes.
I will be describing it (accurately btw) as: ‘The place where time and space stand still’.
4.2 If you need to check if you can visualise
I generally see it as being like wearing virtual reality goggles (with headphones and mic) or having a video screen like a tablet on the inside of your forehead that you can watch when your eyes are shut (it is possible to activate it with them open, but it takes time and training – so not for this exercise!!). In time, you can move it slightly so that you see it about 4 inches in front of your eyes/forehead but for our purposes this doesn’t matter as long as you can see, hear, smell and so on in the altered mind state.
A good exercise for doing this is to be somewhere quiet and comfortable where you won’t be interrupted and to remember what the room/place where you are sitting looks like when you shut your eyes. Then open and shut them until what you see with your eyes shut is the same as when they are open.
This is called anchoring, and it is always a good idea to set an anchor when visualising because in the unlikely event that you get lost or distracted you simply recall that picture and open your eyes to find that you are ‘home’ again.
4.3 How will the session be conducted?
I will ask that all electronic devices are turned off or completely silent including vibrations and that we are completely uninterrupted.
Questions, comments, speaking or distraction of any kind are not permitted while we are in the session. If you cannot comply, please leave the room until we are finished.
I will then ask everyone to be calm, to relax, slow their breathing and direct their attention and breathing to their ‘centre’.
Then we will set up the anchor (see above) for the place that we are in and close our eyes.
I will then start describing places that we will be, actions that we will take, and activities - all inside the altered mind space. This will also involve questions and conversations with people that we meet in that space. My descriptions are intentionally generalised so that you may well see your own versions of where we are and what things and people look like. It may well be worth remembering what happens, where you go and what was said.
Hopefully you will remember the journey so that when you are on your own you may go back to ask more questions (with or without my help).
Please be assured that I will take you safely on your journey and, at the end, return you safely to your starting place. I should be able to see everyone, and you might see others in the group during the experience but equally, you may not. Either way, please concentrate on ‘your’ journey.
4.4 What if I can’t visualise anything?
Firstly, don’t worry, some people aren’t able to do this although with training many of those can which is why I’ve provided the preparation above. You could also telephone me in advance, if necessary, if I am available at the time.
Secondly, just relax, sit quietly, and see if you can get a sense of what is going on. If the worst comes to the worst, I can work with you, one on one, later, if you really need to.
5 “Altered mind space”’ information.
5.1 What is ‘altered mind space’ and how does visualisation fit into it?
This is massively simplified but, as an outline:-
The Brain has a number of waves or oscillatory modes including at least:- Delta wave, Theta wave, Alpha wave, Mu wave, Beta wave, Gamma wave, Sleep spindle, and Thalamocortical oscillations.
‘Normal’ brain activity (Alpha and others) is normally thought of as the conscious brain (Ego) and ‘altered mind space’ (Non-conscious Brain or Id) tends to move into Theta and related waves which are more prevalent when involved in Dreaming, Hypnosis, Meditation, Trance, and Visualisation among others.
You can get a fuller description here: - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neural_oscillation
5.2 What is really happening?
A good question indeed. It has been suggested that there are at least three possible explanations.
Firstly, that this allows us to access our non-conscious mind and memories.
Secondly, that Jung was right about there being a Collective Unconscious see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collective_unconscious that we all may tap into
And thirdly, that in the way that sound is pressure waves travelling in gases, liquids and solid contiguous media and Electromagnetic Waves (Heat, Light, Radio, UV, X-ray, Gamma Ray, microwave and so on) travel in what used to be called the ‘Ether’ there might also be a medium which supports travel for Brain or Psi Waves between minds at the least.
I suspect that it might be a combination of all three. However, for our purposes we simply need to know how to use the ability to visualise to benefit in much the way that we’ve used gravity for many thousands of years yet are still unsure as to how it actually works and what medium (if any) allows its transmission.
5.3 What is the history?
Altered mind space work, (Visualisation, Hypnosis, Visions, Meditations, Hallucination, Voices, Spirit Journeys, Mind Journeys, Scrying, Astral Travel, and many others) has been around especially in Religious and Shamanic practices for several thousand years with the desire for various outcomes but often for knowledge or enlightenment.
Please note that I am not saying that these are all valid or of equal weight, but they are examples of altered mind space or non-conscious mind ‘work’.
I would also reassure you all that what I am doing with this particular visualisation is a very mild, non-extreme, introductory level, experience using only our minds. It is nowhere as extreme as some of those methods described below.
You really should not experiment with what follows!!
An altered mind state can be entered in many different ways: -
For plants and chemicals see:-_ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entheogen for the hundreds of substances used in this way over history.
These are called Entheogens: Wikipedia says: “An entheogen, from Greek, literally meaning "generating the divine within", is any psychoactive substance that induces a spiritual experience and is aimed at spiritual development. This terminology is often chosen to contrast with recreational use of the same drugs.” They include, by the way, wine, beer, and tobacco.
Fasting for forty days and forty nights will put you into a state as will fasting for a week and then kneeling for 48 hours in 200lbs of armour. A sweat lodge, staring into a candle flame for long enough, chanting the same phrase for hours, spinning on your axis for long periods, meditating on an altar, image, statue or indeed nothingness and of course hypnosis and modern visualisation techniques will all get you there.
I would, however, strongly advise that if you do it at all you only do it initially with the guidance and support of an experienced and qualified practitioner that you trust.
